Description:
In this presentation, Mike Johnson and Kim Potter will together deliver a compelling session, guiding participants to learn insights from the past and collaboratively strive for safer profession and community support through transparency.
Objectives include:
Name two past events that have led to reshaping the safety of those working in law enforcement
Explain one way transparency can increase public support of criminal justice workers
Presenters: Mike Johnson and Kim Potter
Mike Johnson started with the Brooklyn Center Police Department in 2005. He worked as a Patrol Sgt from 2015 until leaving in 2021. He was a SWAT operator until promoted to Team Leader. Other assignments include Detective, Narcotics Investigator and FTO. He is currently working for the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office as the Patrol Major.
Kim Potter, a twenty-six-year Law Enforcement professional, served as a patrol officer for the Brooklyn Center Police Department. She was a MN Law Enforcement Memorial Association Honor Guard for 25 years as a Lieutenant, a Field Training Officer, Emergency Operations Unit-Crisis/Hostage Negotiator, and a part of the Domestic Abuse Response Team (DART). Kim is a graduate from Saint Mary’s College with her bachelor’s in criminal justice and minor in Sociology. She also attended Alexandria Technical College for Law Enforcement Skills. Throughout her extensive career, Kim served as both the Brooklyn Center Police Association President as well as the Law Enforcement Labor Services Union President.

Objectives:
Operation of county jails continues to be an increasingly complex and large area of exposure for county government and jail staff. This session will provide an overview of litigation trends for Minnesota county jails. It will provide the largest areas of exposure, the legal landscape for litigated claims, and risk management suggestions to mitigate these claims.
Objectives include:
· List the two largest areas of exposure county jails have to litigation
· Identify three risk management strategies to prevent litigation
Presenter:
Jason Hiveley is a Partner with Iverson Reuvers Condon and has been with the firm since 2003. He practices in the defense of municipal liability claims, civil rights lawsuits and commercial litigation. Jason has handled numerous jury trials in State and Federal Court and has argued several times before the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. He also conducts training seminars for law enforcement agencies across the state.

List the National Commission on Correctional Health Care’s essential standards that should be addressed by the health authority’s policies and procedures
Describe which of the American Correctional Association’s performance-based standards and expected practices should be addressed by the health authority’s policies and procedures
Presenter:
Dr. David Frenz earned a medical degree and completed a family medicine residency at the University of Minnesota. He is also board certified in addiction medicine. Dr. Frenz served as the medical director for four county jails between 2017 and 2023; and has been a member of the Minnesota Department of Corrections Mortality Review Committee since 2020. "Skin Infections, Infestations, and Rashes Common Among Correctional Facilities" | 3:00 - 4:30 PM
Objectives:
Recognize skin conditions and infections common in correctional facilities.
Identify interventions and treatments for skin conditions common in correctional facilities
Presenter:
Becky White, NP is a Certified Dermatology Nurse Practitioner. She received her Bachelor of Arts in nursing from Jamestown University in 1999 and her master’s in nursing from North Dakota State university in 2005. She has been working in the specialty of dermatology since 2006 and currently practices at Dermatology Professionals in Baxter, Minnesota. She is a member of the American Nurse Association and Society of Dermatology Nurse Practitioners.
